Tavush

History

The rocky province of Tavush rests in the northeast portion of Armenia. Sometimes dubbed as a little Armenian Switzerland, this green mountainous territory is stunning. International hikers and tourists travel to the province to see the many trails, mountains, and unforgettable views. Although Tavush only produces 4.8 percent of Armenia's total annual agricultural production, grapes are among the main crops. A little under half of the total surface area of Tavush is arable lands, and only 23 percent of that is plowed. With locations such as the Bavagram Wine Factory and the tourist destination of Dilijan within the region's borders, there are plenty of places to enjoy local wine.

Geography

There are plenty of natural resources in Tavush that make growing grapes possible and ideal. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities to keep the local vineyards hydrated with many wild rivers, springs, and lakes. Most of the region consists of rocky hillsides and forests, but the arable spots are very well-suited for the industry.

The weather is very unsettled and consists of different seasons with frigid winters and warm summers. However, the region has its most favorable weather from May to September. The fresh mountain air makes for the perfect companion to growing and enjoying the local wines.
