    Like its rich winemaking history, the Armenian art scene has proven equal prominence, as many Prehistoric Armenian art pieces are estimated to date back more than 4,000 years. Art intertwines with many aspects of Armenian culture, and one indicator is the recent partnership between the Yerevan Biennial Art Foundation (YBAF) with EVN Wine Academy.

    Experts from premier wine regions around the globe visit Vayots Dzor to consult, advise, or simply study the unique terroir. One of those visiting wine experts included US-based Master of Wine (MW) Lisa Granik, who came to Armenia to consult with Storica Wines, a US importer of Armenian wines. During a tour of vineyards in Vayots Dzor and Van Ardi in Ashtarak, Granik spent her time cataloging the terroir, taking notes, and snapping pictures of the spring vines. Her task, most like that of other consultants making the trip to the Caucasus, is to learn how Armenian winemakers are using the unique terroir and grape varieties to make wines that capture a slice of the international market.

    One kilometer from the main road is Momik WineCube, a tasting room doing things differently. Nver and Narine Ghazaryan, its operators, have gone from selling their grapes to using them to produce their wine brand, Momik. Today they’re welcoming international guests for tastings and selling Momik Wines in stores and restaurants in Yerevan. It’s a big leap for the husband and wife team, but one that is transforming their lives and the industry for the better.

    Karas winemaker Gabriel Rogel is a cleanly dressed, passionate figure. There’s an unmistakable sincerity to his impeccably measured words. Rogel, a native of Mendoza, Argentina, traveled nearly 8,700 miles to settle in Yerevan.
