Armavir

History

Located in northwest Armenia, Armavir's grapes are among the main crops amongst many other fruits, seeds, and vegetables. The province contributes 17.8 percent to the total annual agriculture in Armenia, interspersed with small towns and villages occupying the Ararat plain. Some of Armenia's most sought-after wines call this region home, including distinguished names such as Karas and Voskeni wineries. Like most of Armenia, the wineries are young compared to the histories of some other global wine regions, but the indigenous grapes have their roots deeply embedded for much longer. Unlike the different areas that mainly cultivate local grapes, Armavir is home to many international grape varieties.

Geography

Armavir is the smallest of all the regions in Armenia. The province is in the center of the Ararat plain and mainly consists of agricultural land. As a result, the region is flatter than most of the other regions in Armenia.

Armavir has a dry continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The region does not get much rain and relies on irrigation from the few rivers and nearby lakes. Short freezing winters and long dry summers are significant challenges. The best time for a visit to the region is between late June and early September.
